Make Mine A Seltzer

  1. “making the television my new best friend

I’m going into a program in 5 days and one thing I worry about is managing my fibro. The one thing that has kept me from a flair and managed the chronic pain is sitting in front of the TV for 5-6 hours (or more) a day. It’s down time for my body, for my brain, for everything. I won’t be able to do that. I finally had to simply accept that TV is a normal part of my life. I used to try and live an NPR life, you know, books only, all intellectual stuff. Sorry, can’t do that and have a chronic illness. It simply doesn’t work.

Sometimes when my lack of sleep is so bad, I end up nauseous all day. My GI issues are never ending. People don’t get it. It’s nice though to come on here and see that there are others who get it. Although I’d prefer no one have to go through it, it’s nice to not feel alone.

    1. I know exactly what you mean! I used to be a full on ‘Captain Picard’ about my personal library and then, one day I just found my comprehension skills lacking: I had to repeatedly re-read sentences before I could fully understand them. It was so terrifying – I thought I had early onset Alzheimer’s. So even though I can’t tear through a book in the same manner that I used to, it’s still a blessed relief to know that it’s ‘just’ brain exhaustion!

But, yeah TV can be a true source of solace, particularly at times of real isolation. And don’t get me started on the power of Netflix….

  2. It’s so nice to know someone understands! I’m currently binge watching House. I really identify with his response to chronic pain. Even though I don’t take meds like he did, I can relate to having a hair trigger at times as well as the avoidance of any emotional pain. It’s like having a chronic illness decreased my ability to tolerate everything else.

I know this sounds insane but I had to stop watching Star Trek next gen because it was, well, too Intellectual. I can do that at times and watch some really intense movies but when my body is stressed, it has to be easy watching stuff. One of my go-to’s, don’t laugh, is Third Rock from the Sun. No matter how bad I feel, it always makes me laugh, or at least smile.
