A couple of posts back I dissected an article from The Guardian that claimed that there are no true outsiders, just people faking for the coolness factor. The TLDR version is that there ARE true outsiders but we are invisible to the eyes of the author of the piece.
Anyway, a couple of videos have popped up on my Facebook feed in the last few days that perfectly illustrate both the fuller meaning of outsider status and the ableism that led the author to forget or ignore the fact that we do exist.
The first is a music vid from performer, song writer and mental health advocate Nikki Lynette, which came with this lovely introduction:
“For everyone who knows what it feels like to not fit in… For everyone who’s had people say things behind your back they’ll never say to your face… For everyone who has felt the discomfort of being “different” from the norm… For everyone who thinks outside the box you don’t fit into… this song is for you.”
The second is one of Dylan Marron’s brilliant Unboxing satires. Watch the entire series, if you have time – it’s brilliantly funny…
BTW, today’s title is a line from a song by the late, great David Bowie…
